Catch cans are highly recommended if your engine is stock and are an absolute necessity if you track the car, run a high-horsepower stroker, or add forced induction (turbos or superchargers) where blow-by is drastically increased.
Stops Carbon Buildup: LS engines have a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system designed to pull crankcase gases into the intake to burn off emissions. Unfortunately, this also pulls in oil mist. Over time, this oil coats the intake manifold and valves, forming hard carbon deposits that hurt performance.
Prevents Detonation (Knock): Oil vapor entering the combustion chamber lowers the effective octane rating of your fuel. This can cause the engine to pre-ignite or "knock," which is especially dangerous in modified or boosted LS engines.
Keeps the Intake Clean: Instead of a gunky sludge coating your throttle body and intake runners, the catch can act as a filter. It condenses the heavy oil vapor into a liquid at the bottom of the can and only lets clean air return to the engine.
